5 Tips for Madrid on a budget

Another touristic hotspot in Spain is the capital Madrid. The city is famous for its beautiful parks, architecture, and museums. Madrid isn’t the cheapest destination to go to. However, it’s definitely a popular tourist attraction and a must-see in Spain. To make sure your trip affordable I will give you some tips for Madrid on a budget.

1. The journey to Madrid

Don’t worry about spending too much money on the flight ticket. Madrid has an international airport with good connections to countries all over the world. Also, a Low-cost-carrier like Ryanair is flying into Madrid. If you’re flexible with your departure and arrival dates, try to avoid the weekends. Flights during the week are usually cheaper. If you’re already in Spain and you want to include Madrid in your roundtrip, I would recommend you BlaBlaCar. It’s usually cheaper than the bus or a flight and you can get from one place to another in a short amount of time.

2. Madrid on a budget: Looking for accommodation

If you are going to Madrid on a budget, make sure to look for a cheap place to stay. The city is full of beautiful hotels with an ideal location, but we want to stay here on a budget. Therefore, I would recommend choosing a hostel as your accommodation. Hostels aren’t expensive and most of them are in the core of the city. In hostels, you can also book a private room if you don’t want to share it with other people. Furthermore, you won’t get to spend that much time in your accommodation, because Madrid is full of places to visit. Also, you will get to know new people in the hostel that can give you even more tips for the city and with which you can explore Madrid.

3. Public transport

Don’t spend money on Taxis in Madrid. Not even from the airport to your hostel. Madrid is a big city with things to see, spread all over the place, but you still shouldn’t use Taxis if you’re on a budget. The public transport system in the city is very good and it takes you wherever you want for a small amount of money. You can also walk or cycle to places near your accommodation.

4. Madrid on a budget: Free things to see

Don’t think you can only get a good attraction in Madrid if you pay for it! The city has plenty of free things to see in and around the center. The Palacio Real for example is free every day from 4-6 pm for EU citizens. Also, in some of the museums in Madrid there isn’t an entrance fee. As one of the best European museums for modern art, the Reina SofĂa Museum is for free every day from 7-9 pm. Furthermore, visiting parks like the Retiro-Park are activities that you can do for free during your stay in Spain’s capital.

5. Food

You are on holiday and you probably won’t be in the mood to cook during your stay even if the hostel has a shared kitchen which you could use. If you go out for food, try to avoid restaurants close to monuments. These places are generally overprized and try to attract tourists with their good location. Go to places where local people are sitting. The food in these places is probably better and you will pay less money. You can also ask at the reception of your accommodation for some tips on where you can go for food.
