The Best Hidden Spots in Capri, Italy

I think we can all agree on the fact that Capri is one of the most famous destinations in Italy, and with good reason. There are so many writers, artists and aristocrats who fell in love with this glamorous island. People like Edwin Cerio, Pablo Neruda or the daughter of Thomas Mann fell for the breathtaking scenery of Capri. And no wonder, since Capri has endless sites which you can take inspiration from to compose a poem or paint a beautiful painting. For this reason, this peaceful and romantic Mediterranean retreat is also a wonderful honeymoon destination.

But the popularity of the island is both a blessing and a curse. No one can enjoy the lovely streets and gorgeous landscapes flooded with tourists. First of all, you have to know when to go. You should definitely visit during the shoulder season, when the island is much quieter but you can still enjoy the last rays of sun before winter comes. The best months are September and October.

So, now you’re wondering what to do if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the main touristic spots? We have collected a handful of tourist-free places and hidden spots in Capri where you can enjoy the authentic beauty of the island.

1. Anacapri and Monte Solaro

While the town of Capri is more about fancy boutiques, luxurious yachts, elegant homes and extravagance in general, contrasting to that is Anacapri which is more like a slow-paced, quiet corner of the island. If art and culture is your cup of tea, Anacapri will have several gems to offer to you. This lovely town is characterised by stone-paved pedestrian lanes, gorgeous tiny squares, artisan workshops and various authentic restaurants.

The churches of Santa Sofia and San Michele Arcangelo are well worth a visit. In the baroque Church of San Michele Arcangelo you will be amazed by the beautiful majolica floors that depict the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden. Cassa Rossa, the house painted in Pompeian red, is another iconic place which is just a few minutes walk from the church of San Michele Arcangelo.

Anacapri is situated on the highest point of the island, on the slopes of Mount Solaro, which means that there are several walking and hiking trails setting off from the town. Getting a breath-taking, 360° views over Capri from Mount Solaro is unmissable! You can reach the summit by foot or take a chairlift.

Anacapri is perfect for you if you love walking and hiking, or if you want to have a quiet and lovely holiday.

2. Hidden Spots in Capri: Pizzolungo path

Well, Pizzolungo path is arguably the most beautiful hiking trail that winds along the southern coast of the island. All you have to do is follow the signs from the centre of the town of Capri which will take you to the spectacular Natural Arch. This coastal path will provide you with scenic views over the Faraglioni Rocks and you can also reach an important archaeological site which is the Grotta di Matermania (a large, natural cave).

The hike is worth every footstep, the gorgeous views of the quirky arch and the blue bay will definitely compensate for your effort. Wear comfortable shoes and don’t forget to take your camera with you!

3. Villa Lysis

Villa Lysis is a historic, Art Nouveau-style villa built on a clifftop over the sea. This elegant villa was built in 1904 by the Parisian born poet Jacques d’Adelswärd-Fersen. A grand staircase leads you up to the enchanting entrance portal where you can walk under Ionic columns. You can see golden mosaic tiles, luxurious marble,  floral motifs, elegant salons, stuccos, huge bedrooms and panoramic terraces.

Be sure to take a lovely walk in the garden from where you will have a scenic overlook at the sea. The villa is truly magical whilst the last, orangey sunbeams of the day reflect off of the golden mosaics of the marble columns. No wonder that it was a gathering spot for artists, intellectuals, poets, and writers in the 19th century. It will leave you speechless.

4. Hidden Spots in Capri: Boat Tour

Participating in a boat tour and seeing Capri from the sea is a wonderful and unmissable experience. You shouldn’t be worried about being bothered by hordes of tourists out there on the sea. It’s just you and the sound of the water crashing against the side of the boat.

There are many providers from which you can choose. You can explore hidden coves, sea caves and discover all the magic the sea has to offer you. We can recommend Gianni’s Boat to you. They know all of the famous coastal landmarks and the most beautiful hidden spots. The boat captains are very informative, helpful and ready to make your day magical.
