# The Frida Kahlo Experience: The artist

First of all, if we had to describe her in a few words, we would say that she is a universal icon. She managed to create her own style in which personal circumstances mingle with the elements of nature. The life of Frida Kahlo was characterized by a difficult physical condition and a great capacity for reaction and resistance to adversity at the same time. However, she was able to transform her immobility into opportunity and her suffering into energy that made her immortal. In this exhibition, you can experience this type of passion and energy coming to life. You will meet a unique woman, get to know her strength, her courage, her talent and her immense love.

Insight into her life

Firda Kahlo was born in Coyoacán on the southern outskirts of Mexico City. She grew up in her family’s home that she later referred to as the Blue House (La Casa Azul). Frida had very poor health in her childhood, contracted polio at the age of six, and had to be bedridden for several months. After that, at school she met her future husband for the first time, the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera.

She literally personifies resilience in the face of hardship. On a September afternoon, she was traveling by bus when a tragic accident happened. The bus collided with a streetcar and Frida Kahlo was so seriously injured that she had to undergo more than 30 medical operations later on in her lifetime. The accident left her in a great deal of pain, both physically and physiologically. Therefore, to kill the time and alleviate the pain during her slow recovery, she started painting. Her raw and emotional self-portraits show both her physical and psychological wounds from her life.

Throughout her career, she created approximately 150 works. Most of these are self-portraits that deal with such themes as identity, the human body, and death. It was only several years after her death that her work became widely acclaimed.
