Trip to Mexico City: 6 things you should do

Are you thinking about going to Mexico for your next holidays? Picking this country as a destination is definitely the right choice. The country is full of things to do and its climate is perfect for holidays outside Europe. Apart from the regions along the coast, also the capital Mexico City offers a variety of things to do. I will show you 6 things you should do during your trip to Mexico City.

1. Chapultepec

Chapultepec is a big hill, located in the southwest of the center of Mexico City. The Bosque de Chapultepec is a 4km² park and a popular destination for a day trip. Furthermore, it is divided into 3 sectors. In the first sector, for example, you get to see different museums, the zoo, and the Lago de Chapultepec with the Casa del Lago. Here, you can also rent a boat and explore the river. Caso del Lago is nowadays part of the University of Mexico City. In the area México Mágico, in sector 2, you get to see miniature models of Mexico’s monuments. Finally, in sector 3 of the park, you can visit the abandoned Atlantis waterpark.

2. Trip to Mexico City: Plaza de la Constitución

The Plaza de la Constitución, also called Zócalo, is the central square of Mexico City. It’s one of the biggest and most famous town squares in the whole world. Unlike many other megacities, Mexico has, with Zócalo, a distinct center of the country. Important buildings, like the town hall, the cathedral, and the residence of the president are in the surroundings of this square.

3. Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe

In between the years 1974 and 1976, the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe was built next to the old cathedral of the city. Furthermore, in the cathedral, there is room for about 40.000 people. In addition to this, it’s one of the biggest churches in the whole world.

Visiting the Floating Gardens is the ideal activity to escape the busy life in the center of Mexico City. Man-made canals with a total length of about 150 km and islands of planted rafts (chinampas) covered with sea mud are what make this place so special. The Floating Gardens are also famous for their flower market and the colorful boats, which take you on a ride along the river.

5. Teotihuacán

If you’re interested in history and historical sites this place certainly is your bag. Teotihuacán is about an hour’s drive away from Mexico City. In the center of the pre-Aztec ruined city of Teotihuacán, you’ll find the world-famous Pyramid of the sun. It is the third-largest pyramid in the whole world. The construction of the building started back in the first century.

6. Trip to Mexico City: Mexican food

The last thing you should do during your trip to Mexico City is trying traditional Mexican food. Mexican restaurants are all over the world but eating the food in the country where it’s from is a different thing. Search for places where local people are eating. These restaurants are usually the best in quality and price. Try to avoid the core of the city, as this is where overprized tourist restaurants are.
